A branch of sculpture: Michelle Lopez's Southern Tree/Black September, 2009

This artist crafts white limbs among real branches in environmental space, I like the use of different values ... Using black and white line drawing on a medium value plain would create a great dramatic contrast. High contrast may prove to be important when illustrating tree limbs since they are medium tone naturally, and therefore hard to read -- this can be seen if you've ever taken a B&W photograph of a group of trees on a cloudy day. They practically fade into the background ... most B&W tree or even nature photography depends on dramatic lighting or an extreme difference in background value to properly illustrate the drama of the tree's shape and angles.

This artist above takes this value -problem into account contrasting white walls with the darker limbs.
